On 23 September 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
The Ayushman Bharat program aims to provide affordable healthcare with paperless and cashless services to over 50 million beneficiaries under the PMJAY programme.
Households registered under the PMJAY program are eligible for health insurance cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per year, providing secondary and tertiary care and hospitalization benefits to approximately 10.7 million people.
The PMJAY program is aligned with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the WHO and the United Nations.
The Ayushman Bharat program supports the United Nations' goal of leaving no one behind as part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The PMJAY program is available at select Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs) where the government pays for treatment. As of April 2023, there were 1,59,662 HWCs functioning in the country.
The HWC provides services related to non-communicable diseases, ENT care, palliative care and rehabilitation, and mental health, as well as emergency, trauma, maternal and child health services.
According to the 71st round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), 85.9% of rural households and 82% of urban households do not have access to health insurance.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana covers the cost from the time of hospitalization till the patient recovers.
The Central Government has signed MoUs with 30 States and Union Territories to implement the Ayushman Bharat programme.
